OMEGA SEAMASTER PROFESSIONAL "BOND" 300 CO-AXIAL CHRONOMETER 2220.80

In 1995, the 007 film Goldeneye was released, and for the first time, Bond was wearing an Omega and not a Rolex. The Seamaster Pierce Brosnan was wearing was an Omega Seamaster 300m, specifically the reference 2541.80. Fast forward to 2006, the reference 2220.80 was deployed in another Bond movie, Casino Royale, Daniel Craig's first movie.

We've had this watch in our shop more times than we can count. It's a favorite among collectors for a lot of good reasons. If you're looking for a sold and reliable everyday piece, that still has some semi-vintage appeal this Omega is a fantastic option.

2006 Refresh

Omega's Seamaster line was started in 1948, and remains the oldest model in Omega's collection. The reference we are looking at here is the 2220.80, which was a mid-cycle refresh replacing the 2531.80. For the refresh, Omega decided to dress up the watch a little, using applied indices and logo on the dial instead of printing. Omega also introduced the first generation Co-Axial movement, the 2500 in this model. You still get the aluminum bezel, which often develops a nice patina with time, as well as the signature wave pattern dial.

Competition for the Submariner

The Seamaster 300m often gets compared with the ubiquitous Rolex Submariner. The elements that make the Submariner so popular, are shared by the Omega. Namely, the watch is a sporty diver, that can be worn casually or can be dressed up very easily. This model of the SMP can be compared to the Rolex 16610 submariner model.

Wrist Impression

On the wrist, this watch wears smaller than it's 41mm diameter would suggest. I would say this watch watch will fit most people like a glove. This is the type of everyday watch you can just keep on no matter what circumstance you're in. This watch is equally compelling with Jeans and a T-Shirt, at a Cocktail party, or at the pool. I find that this watch has some interesting design elements that set it apart from the submariner. There's the wave pattern dial, which is executed in a very tasteful and restrained fashion. The twisted lyre lugs are, a signature of Omega cases, are equally beautiful and comfortable.

Value

Pre-Owed prices for an Omega Seamaster 2220.80 range from $2500-3500  depending on condition and the presence of box and papers. Compare this with the $9,500-10k price range of a 16610 and you're looking at a true bargain for an everyday dive watch.
