The Rolex Submariner Date 1680, introduced in 1966 and produced through the late 1970s, marks a significant evolution in the Rolex Submariner series by introducing the date function, a feature that had not been included in previous Submariner models. This was a major innovation, as it included the now-iconic Cyclops lens on the crystal above the date window to enhance legibility—a characteristic that would become a hallmark of Rolex date models. The 1680 is special not only for this addition but also for being the first Submariner to bridge the gap between a diving tool watch and a luxury timepiece, with options available in stainless steel or gold. It retained the robust and functional design necessary for diving, with water resistance up to 200 meters and a rotatable bezel to monitor diving time, but its aesthetic additions appealed to a broader audience. This model is particularly valued by collectors for its historical significance as the first Submariner with a date function, marking a pivotal point in the evolution of Rolex’s diving watches.
